The Met Office has issued a new yellow weather warning for snow and ice in Northern Ireland.

The warning will be in place across the region from 6pm on Tuesday to 10am on Wednesday.

The Met Office have said wintry showers will develop during Tuesday evening and continue overnight into Wednesday morning.

Away from the north coast lying snow is possible, with 1 to 2cm in places and up to 5cm over higher ground.

The Met Office has said ice will readily form on untreated surfaces.

Into tonight, wintry showers are expected to become more widespread with a risk of ice on untreated surfaces increasing.

A widespread frost is set to develop across the Northern Ireland and the Met Office warning some lying snow is possible by dawn.

We can expect to see highs of 5 °C with lows of -2 °C.

In a video shared by Aerial Vision NI on Monday snow showers are seen on the Sperrins mountain range which stretch from Co Tyrone to Co Londonderry.

Dan Suri, Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office has warned more weather warnings may be issued later in the week.

“Updates to the warnings throughout the week are likely, so it is important to stay up to date with the latest forecast.”

The Met Office warns that you should give yourself extra time for journeys and try and stick to main roads which are likely to be less slippery.

If driving, make sure you have some essentials in your car in the event of any delays (e.g., warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, a torch, ice scraper/de icer, a warning triangle, high visibility vest and an in-car phone charger).
