Research has unveiled that those aged over 65 spend less than an hour a day conversing with others.

A survey of 1,000 adults aged 65 and above discovered that 43 per cent feel they have a limited circle of people to converse with, resulting in an average of just 58 minutes a day spent in conversation.

According to the figures from OnePoll.com, one in four would appreciate more opportunities to chat with younger individuals, and 22 per cent yearn for a more diverse group of people to engage with.

In response to these findings, Parsley Box, who commissioned the research, has launched a podcast specifically tailored for retirees.

The four-episode ‘Wise Words’ Podcast covers topics many older adults can relate to including maintaining friendships, cooking traditions, lifelong learning, and navigating modern technology.

Each episode features three guests, led by 86 year old broadcaster David Hamilton.

Holly McComb, CEO of Parsley Box, commented: “After the age of 65, many people stop working and find their social circle reduced. But this leaves many feeling they have fewer people to talk to.”

“We wanted to create something to help counteract this – something warm and engaging, like listening to old friends chatting, but in a modern format.”

“Sixty-five is no age at all, and the survey results show they’re as interested in health and wellness as they are in retirement or finance.”

The study also shed light on the favourite conversation topics among over 65s, which include reminiscing about the good old days, music and food.

Travel, films and television, family and relationships were also popular subjects, as well as health and wellness, environmental concerns, and art and culture.

Interestingly, the research found that 24 per cent of respondents felt engaged in a conversation when tuning into podcasts or the radio.

Holly McComb, representing Parsley Box, commented: “Podcasts provide a fantastic way for older adults to stay socially connected.”

“They offer a wealth of information and entertainment that can be accessed at any time, making it convenient for older individuals who may not have the same access to social events.”

“Whether it’s learning about new developments in health, hearing inspiring life stories, or enjoying engaging discussions on current events, podcasts are a wonderful way to keep the mind active and engaged.”
