A 23-year-old man has been detained under the Mental Health Act following a double fatal stabbing in Manchester’s Moss Side area.

Emergency services were called to Great Southern Street at around 5am on Sunday following reports that two men had been stabbed.

Despite the best efforts of first responders, both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect was initially arrested on suspicion of murder before being detained under the Mental Health Act after assessment by medical professionals.

Greater Manchester Police have confirmed that the suspect and one of the victims were known to each other.

Police said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident, which is being treated as isolated with no threat to the wider public.

Officers have established a cordon at the scene, with several police guarding each end and one stationed at the entrance to an Islamic centre.

One resident told the Mail: “We can’t go outside at the moment. I saw it this morning, about 4am – out of my window, there was a man laying on the floor and another laying further ahead.”

Forensic tents have been set up on Great Southern Street and Kippax Street as investigators work to establish the full circumstances. The police have deployed additional neighbourhood officers to conduct visible patrols in the area.

Chief Superintendent David Meeney, district commander for the City of Manchester division, said: “This morning, two lives have been lost in our community, and our thoughts go to their families who have lost a loved one today.”

“We understand the shockwaves that this devastating news will have caused in the local community and further afield across Greater Manchester,” he added.

He thanked the local community for pulling together and cooperating with their enquiries. A large emergency service presence remains at the scene this morning, with police asking the public to continue avoiding the area around Great Southern Street.

Deputy Mayor Kate Green offered her deepest sympathies to the victims’ families and thanked emergency services for their response.

“I want to reassure the community who will inevitably be shocked and concerned by the attack this morning, that GMP has increased visibility,” she said.
