Molumby: England are beatable

“They’ve got world-class technical players so we know we’ll have to dig in and I think we’ve got a game plan to hopefully nullify them and make it as difficult as possible.”

The Waterford man has been speaking to RTÉ’s Tony O’Donoghue.

Team news: McGuinness to make his senior bow

There’s been a big call from the Ireland manager in his selection, as Dan McDonnell reports:

Mark McGuinness will make his Ireland debut in this evening’s Nations League encounter with England.

The Luton defender has been promoted straight into the starting XI in one of three changes from the team which scraped past Finland on Thursday.

Dara O’Shea replaces Matt Doherty at right back, while Jayson Molumby comes in for the unavailable Jason Knight in the centre of the park.

Mikey Johnston drops to the bench, with Callum O’Dowda pushing up to the left side of midfield, Liam Scales switching out to left-back and McGuinness coming in alongside Nathan Collins in the heart of the back four.

Hallgrimsson has spoken about rotation and flexibility within games so there’s a possibility that Ireland could switch to a back three for periods of the match.
The inclusion of O’Shea and McGuinness means that Ireland will have four starting players who are all more at home at centre half.

As expected, Harry Kane is restored to the England starting team.

Ireland: Kelleher; O’Shea, Collins, McGuinness, Scales; Ebosele, Cullen, Molumby, O’Dowda; Szmodics, Ferguson

England: Pickford, Livramento, Walker, Guehi, Hall; Jones, Gallagher; Madueke, Bellingham, Gordon; Kane.

Good afternoon and welcome along. Ireland’s Nations League campaign draws to a close with a meeting against old rivals England at Wembley Stadium.
It’s the first time in 33 years the countries will have faced each other on English soil, that Euro ‘92 qualifier ending 1-1 back in March 1991 as Niall Quinn levelled things up in the first half following Lee Dixon’s early opener at the old Wembley.
While Ireland have ensured they won’t be automatically demoted from League B thanks to Thursday’s win over Finland, Heimir Hallgrimsson’s men are set for a relegation play-off regardless of this result.
England interim boss Lee Carsley, meanwhile, can earn promotion to the top tier of the Nations League by claiming a victory in his final game before new permanent manager Thomas Tuchel takes charge in January.

In the reverse fixture in September, it was former Irish players Declan Rice and Jack Grealish who did the damage in a 2-0 loss for Ireland.

Kick-off is 5pm and the match is live on RTÉ 2/RTÉ Player and UTV.
