Lorraine Kelly has spoken of her heartache as families increasingly rely on baby banks for support. The 64 year old television presenter, a mother herself to daughter Rosie, is championing the Lorraine’s Big Baby Bank Appeal, a new initiative that aims to gather essential items to aid families in need during the run-up to Christmas.
“I was so sad to hear of the stories of parents having to turn to baby banks for all kinds of basics from nappies to cots and clothes,” she revealed.
The well-known Scottish broadcaster continued: “Not just people struggling because they can’t find work, but those in employment who don’t earn enough to give their babies all that they need through no fault of their own. It’s wonderful that baby banks are there to give support and dignity but how I wish we didn’t actually need them. I know our wonderful viewers will help,” reports the Mirror.
It is estimated that currently 4.3 million children are living in poverty within the UK, with a startling one million facing destitution amidst the cost of living crisis leaving households nationwide in dire straits. The supermarket giant Morrisons has thrown its support behind Lorraine’s campaign, setting up 497 donation points at their stores for a two-week period.
“I met a lot of the parents, one of whom needed help when she was very young and had her daughter. And then she donated to the baby bank herself when she got back on her feet,” Lorraine shared, adding: “She’s now pregnant and lost her job so needs their help again. I also donated some of the clothes and equipment that Billie has grown out of and helped sort out some of the little outfits and blankets donated.”
Lorraine, who has recently become a grandmother, considers her granddaughter Billie immensely fortunate for having two parents that can fully provide for her. She elucidated: “It’s so important that babies are fed and clothed properly and given the best start in life. My granddaughter Billie is so lucky to have two working parents who can give her all she needs.”
“Billie is the light of my life and thriving thanks to the love and care of Rosie and her Steve.”
The joy was palpable when Rosie had her first grandchild, with Lorraine beaming with happiness and making the most of spending time with the precious new addition. “They are brilliant parents, I love having them to visit and getting lots of cuddles.”
