Meghan Markle’s comments on boxed hair dye were labelled “tone deaf” by some royal fans.
The Duchess of Sussex made the quip about the affordable beauty treatment at the launch of Highbrow Hippie’s new haircare line.
On November 15, Meghan attended the launch party for her close friend and hair colourist Kadi Lee’s new Highbrow Hippie Haircare and Wellness line at Gjelina restaurant in Venice, California.
The duchess, 43, showed support for the female-founded venture which she backs as an investor.

Lee spoke about how her friendship with Meghan influenced the evolution of her business.
The Duchess of Sussex later joked: “I was using boxed dye when I met her!” eliciting laughs from those in attendance.
As opposed to more affordable boxed hair dyes, Kadi Lee’s products at Highbrow Hippie Haircare are on the pricier end of the spectrum.
For example, the “Healthy Hair Duo” retails for $206 (£163), while the Essential Wellbeing Complex sells for $118 (£93).

Royal fans took to social media to discuss Meghan joking about using boxed hair dyes.
One said: “I wish her well but c’mon now,” attaching a screenshot from the Highbrow Hippie Haircare website showing the expensive price ranges.
Another wrote: “Talk about tone deaf…”
However, many fans took to Meghan’s defence, with one referencing the duchess’s Canada trip earlier this year, where Kadi Lee dyed the royal’s hair a “chestnut brown” colour.

Another fan commented: “Women supporting other women. Congratulations Highbrow Hippie.”
At the launch party, Meghan presented Lee with roses from the garden of her Montecito home, where she lives with Prince Harry and their children, Prince Archie, five, and Princess Lilibet, three.
