Line of Duty fans have been given yet more encouragement about the return of the crime drama series after star Adrian Dunbar said there is “more than a little bit of hope”.

It comes as the actor also spoke about his friend Barry McGuigan entering the I’m A Celeb jungle and said he is “putting my money” on the former boxing legend doing well on the reality show.

Over recent days the Co Fermanagh man has been asked about the potential return of the BBC police show to TV screens.

Now speaking on the Lorraine show this morning, the 66-year-old actor said: “We don’t want to tease the British public forever about it. We want it to happen, everyone wants it to happen so let’s make it happen but it just depends on when.”

“There’s more than a little bit of hope.

“It just depends on when all the stars align and of course Jed has to write it.”

Responding to Dunbar, the show’s host Lorraine joked: “He’s got to write it, that’s true. We have to lock him in a shed.”

“Yes we have to lock him in a shed at the back of the garden,” the Enniskillen man responded.

Created by Jed Mercurio, Line of Duty — which was filmed in Belfast — last aired May 2021 with Ted Hastings and his team uncovering the identity of the ‘Fourth Man’ and derailing corruption from within the force.

Rumours were sparked about the future of the series last month when Dunbar was seen in London alongside fellow stars Martin Compston, who played DI Steve Arnott in the drama, alongside Vicky McClure who played DI Kate Fleming.

At the weekend during an interview with Times Radio, the actor spoke more about his character in the show and described his time working on it as a “humbling and satisfying experience”.

“To end up creating what is an iconic character on British television and also within an iconic TV show would have been a huge ambition of mine,” he said.

“And so to do it is a very humbling and very satisfying experience. So that’s how I’d describe it. It’s been something that, when you think about it, keeps you warm — it’s very, very nice.”

Meanwhile, speaking on Lorraine on Wednesday, Dunbar touched on his friend Barry McGuigan going into the I’m A Celeb jungle.

He added: “Barry is in there. I’ll tell you one thing about Barry McGuigan, he will be there to take over, he won’t be there to take part because he is competitive. I’m putting my money on Barry definitely because he will be good.

“As he said himself it’s the mental end not the physical thing for him because he has always been unbelievably fit so it’ll be the mental thing for Barry but we’ll see how it goes. It’ll be interesting.”
