The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued an urgent notice with a six-week countdown starting yesterday (November 9), targeting thousands born before 1959. The DWP is highlighting the urgency for those eligible to claim Pension Credit, which offers not just extra cash but potential perks like a free TV licence.
It’s believed there are countless people in the UK who could claim Pension Credit but haven’t done so. Particularly crucial this year, eligibility for Pension Credit grants recipients the Winter Fuel Payment, potentially up to £300.
However, following amendments by Chancellor Rachel Reeves, now only those receiving means-tested benefits will be eligible for it. To get the Winter Fuel Payment in the current year, pensioners must apply for Pension Credit by December 21—a fast-approaching deadline, now just under six weeks away.
A statement from DWP on X advised: “If you know someone over State Pension age (aged 66 or over), it’s worth talking to them about Pension Credit and checking if they could be entitled.”
There’s also an eligibility calculator available online. Additionally, securing Pension Credit can qualify pensioners for other benefits as well, reports Devon Live.
