When it comes to cleaning our kitchens, ovens can often get neglected.
They are particularly tricky to clean at times – especially when you need to banish stubborn grease from the tiny nooks and crannies.
But thankfully, there are tricks you can use to make the job easier. On TikTok, a woman shared how you can use a 16p oven staple to get the job done. All you’ll need is a single dishwasher tablet, which is great for eliminating spilled cooking oil, burnt food and grime.
In a viral video that’s garnered more than 48,000 likes, the TikToker adds the tablet into an oven-proof glass dish. She uses a Fairy Platinum dishwasher tablet, which typically sets you back around £15 for a pack of 94 (that’s 16p per tablet).
She then pours boiling water from the kettle over the tablet, letting it dissolve a bit before sliding the dish into the oven and shutting the door. She leaves the tablet to fully dissolve in the water with the oven switched on and set to 100C.
She lets the dish sit for an hour, which helps to lift up the dirt without wasting any time or energy scrubbing. You can simply wipe it away with minimal effort.
The TikTok user explains: “The steam containing active ingredients from the tablet will settle on the oven walls. They have degreasing, dissolving, and cleaning properties. They will perfectly cover all the burnt food residues. The heat of the oven will speed up the dissolving process. As a result, you won’t need to scrub them.
“After an hour, open the oven and wipe the walls with a wet sponge. The dirt will come off immediately. It will even collect heavily burnt residues like a magnet.”
It seems many were impressed with the household hack – as the video has been liked by 151,000 people. If this particular tip doesn’t work for you, don’t fret.
There are plenty more ways to eliminate oven grease. While some swear by using lemons and steam to lift up dirt, others insist using baking soda makes scrubbing a lot more effective.
