Dr. Martens are a fashion staple. You can easily spot a pair of Docs blocks away from their iconic yellow stitching. They’re versatile and can be sported with jeans, dresses or shorts.

Dr. Martens eventually become those comfy to-go shoes, but they are not born that way. Docs, similar to Birkenstocks, require an ease-in period before they mold to your feet and become your foot’s best friend.

We connected with the Dr. Martens team to learn best practices for breaking in the classic footwear.

How to break in Dr. Martens footwear

  1. Start with socks

Double Docs Socks are literally made for the purpose of breaking in new shoes. The socks have padding around friction points like the back of the heel and around the ankle. They also have extra arch support to prevent blisters.

  1. Treat your shoes to a massage

The more you massage your Dr. Martens, the more they will soften. Massaging your Docs with your hands will simulate the effect walking has on the material, giving your feet a head start.

  1. Get your Balsam on

Dr. Martens sells tins of Wonder Balsam to nourish, condition and soften leather. If you rub some of the balm on the inside of your new shoes, it will help the ease-in process.

  1. Stretch out the boot uppers

When it comes to Dr. Marten boots (like the ‘1460’ Boot), this step can really come in handy. When you’re not wearing your boots, stuff them with a soup can or newspaper —  something to keep those uppers working. Why should your feet have to do all the work when there’s soup (newspaper may be harder to come by)?

If you already have a pair of Docs ready to get worked in, try the steps above. If you’re looking for a new pair of Dr. Martens, here are some go-to retailers that have flexible and easy online shopping (including returns):
