A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson as a house fire in west Belfast has been extinguished.

Emergency services earlier attended the scene of the blaze at a terrace property in the Cavendish Street area, which police confirmed has caused “extensive damage” to the home.

They said when officers attended the scene a man was outside the property and was then arrested. He was also taken to hospital.

Several fire appliances from Springfield and Central Fire stations attended the fire.

Local residents raised the alarm after seeing smoke coming from the property.

Taking to social media the Beechmount Residents Collective said: “Another fast response from residents who made the 999 call and brilliant work from the fire department.

“We hope the family are not too shook up and are all safe.”

A PSNI spokesperson said: “A report was received at approximately 11.05am that a property in the area was alight.

“Officers attended, alongside colleagues from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service who extinguished the blaze. Extensive damage was caused to the house.

“On arrival, a man was located outside the property and was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

“He was subsequently taken to hospital for treatment to injuries that are not believed to be serious.

“Enquiries are ongoing and we are treating this report as arson.”
