We’ve all been in that awkward position – stuck in a WhatsApp group that’s filling up our inbox with messages we’d rather not see. It can be uncomfortable to leave the chat, often easier just to let those old conversations sink to the bottom of your message list.

Until recently, a disappearing act wasn’t an option on WhatsApp as everyone would be told you’d “left the chat” as it happened. This could sometimes spark uncomfortable situations where people dive straight into asking why you’ve walked away from the chat.

However, a 2022 update introduced a game-changing feature that many users are still unaware of. It offers a less awkward way to manage out-of-control group chats.

To leave a WhatsApp group, you can do the following:

  1. Open WhatsApp and tap the Chats tab.
  2. Select the group you want to leave.
  3. Tap the group name at the top of the screen.
  4. Tap the group chat icon to open the chat’s info page.
  5. Scroll down and tap Exit Group.
  6. Confirm your exit by tapping Exit Group again.

Now, when you decide to leave a group, a prompt reassures you that “only admins” will see the alert that you’ve left. Other group members might only realise your absence if they check the participant list and find you missing, reports the Express.

But, if it’s the group admin you want to avoid any drama with, WhatsApp offers gentler options for some peace and quiet in your notifications. The app’s mute feature gives you the power to silence constant pings from any conversation, both individual and group

Users now have the option to silence notifications temporarily for up to 8 hours a week, or permanently with the ‘always’ setting. It’s important to know that other participants won’t be aware they’ve been muted, however, you will still be notified if you are tagged or mentioned.

Another feature allows you to archive a chat, effectively moving it to a different folder within WhatsApp. Again, the other person won’t be told you’ve done this.

Similar to muting, no notifications will pop up for archived conversations unless there is a direct mention or reply. A small number next to “Archived” will inform you of any unread messages from those chats.
