The Duchess of Edinburgh left a man in “hysterics” after getting struck by a golf ball, a royal photographer has revealed.

Sophie, 59, showed her good humour after being hit on the head by her own golf ball during a visit to Legoland Windsor on Tuesday.

The mother-of-two, who was attending the launch of NSPCC’s Number Day, took the mishap in her stride as she played mini golf with local schoolchildren.

The amusing incident occurred when the duchess’s golf shot took an unexpected bounce, with onlookers watching as the ball struck her on the head.

Photographer Tim Rooke, who captured the moment, revealed that the royal found the situation highly entertaining, demonstrating her characteristic grace under unexpected circumstances.

The incident took place during one of the duchess’s solo engagements, where she participated in maths-inspired activities as part of her role as NSPCC Patron.

“She hit the ball, and it bounced straight up in the air. You could see her watching it, and it just sort of whacked her,” Rooke told Hello!.

“She laughed; she found it funny – she’s a good sport. You can see the guy behind her in the picture was in hysterics,” the photographer added.

The duchess’s reaction perfectly demonstrated her down-to-earth nature, with Rooke noting: “She doesn’t mind a photo like this going around – what she cares about is raising awareness of the charity.

“She is really good at these events; she always makes everyone feel quite special.”

The moment was first shared on social media platform X, where Rooke announced Sophie had managed to hit herself while playing crazy golf.

The visit marked the launch of NSPCC’s annual Number Day, set to take place on February 7, with Legoland Windsor hosting special maths-inspired activities.

Financial expert Emmanuel Asuquo and Great British Bake Off finalist Josh Smalley joined the duchess for the fundraising event.

Local school pupils had the opportunity to meet Sophie during the activities, which were designed to make mathematics both fun and educational.

As NSPCC Patron, the duchess’s involvement helped highlight the charity’s commitment to combining learning with enjoyment through their Number Day programme.
