GM is recalling thousands of vehicles in Canada due to a transmission control valve issue. The auto manufacturer says certain SUV and pickup models with a diesel engine are affected. Notably, however, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the U.S. does not not appear to show a similar recall for any of the models affected in Canada.

Reading the recall details on Transport Canada, it seems as though GM Canada is recalling a total of 52,220 vehicles due to wear and tear of the transmission control valve. However, reading further down to the “Corrective Actions” section, it seems as though the problem isn’t an issue with the transmission control valve itself, but rather the vehicle not being to properly detect the wear of it.

As such, the company will notify owners by mail and they will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealership to update the software that detects the deterioration of the transmission control valve. If there is an issue, the service engine light will turn on, and display a message on the instrument panel; the vehicle will then be limited to fifth gear. However, if there is an issue with that part, GM hasn’t mentioned that fix as part of this recall.

The company noted that over time, the affected vehicles (see below for a list of all affected models) could lose pressure in the transmission control valve, which could cause the transmission to “shift harshly.” If this happens, the rear wheels can lock up and increase the chances of the driver losing control of the vehicle and potentially causing a crash. The update should be able to detect the wear before there is an issue with the wheels locking up.
