The Canadian prime minister has congratulated Donald Trump on his U.S. presidential victory.

“Congratulations to Donald Trump on being elected President of the United States,” Justin Trudeau wrote in a Wednesday morning post on X. “The friendship between Canada and the U.S. is the envy of the world. I know President Trump and I will work together to create more opportunity, prosperity, and security for both our nations.”

On Wednesday morning, Justin Trudeau said he would seek to “work together” to bolster the economies and security of both nations, reports Barron’s News.

“Canada and the U.S. have the world’s most successful partnership. We are neighbours and friends, united by a shared history, common values and steadfast ties between our peoples. We are also each other’s largest trade partners and our economies are deeply intertwined,” Trudeau said, reports the CBC.

“We look forward to working with president-elect Trump and his administration, including on issues such as trade, investment, and continental peace and security.”

Global Affairs Minister Melanie Joly added her own good wishes in a Wednesday post on X: “Congratulations, @realDonalTrump, on your victory as President-Elect. Canada and the U.S. are friends, neighbours and allies–deeply connected through our economies and our people. Together, we’ll focus on investment, growth, and global peace and security.”

Along with his congratulatory message Trudeau also issued an official statement, about Canada-U.S. trade, noting what Canada and the U.S. accomplished during Trump’s first term as president, including negotiating the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement.

“My job as Canadian prime minister has always been to work with whomever the Americans elect to be their president and make sure that I’m standing up for Canadian values, Canadian interests and Canadian jobs and that’s exactly what I’m going to continue to do,” Trudeau said to reporters on Tuesday, according to Global News.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford says he is “optimistic about the opportunities that lie ahead for more trade and co-operation between Ontario and the United States. Now is the time to bet big on the U.S.-Ontario relationship” Ford said in a statement.
