Bristol’s Christmas Market has made a return for 2024 and with it, the much-loved Yorkshire Pudding Wraps. Despite being born and raised in Bristol – and having visited the festive market in Broadmead many a time over the years – I have never sampled one, so I decided this year was the year I’d give it a go.

The team at the market stall are smiley, friendly, welcoming, and immediately give you those festive feels. When I told them I had never had one of their wraps before, they were so excited to get my verdict. And I made sure, after finding a spot to sit and eat the rather messy meal, to journey back over and congratulate them on a job well done.

I decided on a roast turkey wrap with all the trimmings, including gravy, cranberry sauce, stuffing, mash, carrots, green beans and peas. If you’re going to try one, you might as well go all out, right? This, as with all of the different meat varieties you can choose from, costs £12 and, like many of the market stalls this year, is cash only.

Absolutely starving on a Tuesday lunchtime, it was the perfect lunch food during a busy work day and, as soon as I took a bite, I immediately regarded how it felt like Christmas. Christmas in snack form is how I’m describing this – and it’s no wonder it’s a hit with locals and marketgoers from far and wide.

In the queue, there were customers who had travelled from as far as Wells on this same Tuesday afternoon, simply to get their hands on one of these wraps – they had to be convinced to go and explore more of the market and Bristol Shopping Quarter, but they wouldn’t have minded if this market food stop-off had been the only thing they’d done during their visit.

Back to my Yorkshire pud wrap – and it’s sensible that I chose to devour it while sat within the cosy benches of the Jäger Barn Bar, due to the worry of leaking sauces. I’d asked for a wooden fork, too, and made sure I stocked up on napkins just in case.

But, surprisingly, not a drop was spilled. The turkey was cooked and shredded to perfection. The whole wrap was nice and warm, and every element of the veg, stuffing, and mash, was delicious. While I wish they had put a bit of gravy and cranberry sauce underneath the turkey to really make the flavours pop, it certainly was like I was tucking into a Christmas dinner in the Christmassy-est of settings. All that was missing was a brussels sprout or two.

The team don’t scrimp on portion sizes, either. These wraps are hefty and overflowing with the veg, sauce and extras inside. It definitely filled me up – the only problem is that now I know I’m going to need one as regularly as possible in the run up to Christmas.

For £12, it’s definitely not the cheapest of lunches. But if you consider the location, the time of year, the impeccable service, and the fact that you’re basically getting a small roast dinner in sandwich form, it’s definitely worth a try if you’re paying the market a visit this year.
