Donald Trump has vowed to “unlock America’s glorious destiny” after he officially passed 270 electoral college votes to win the US election.

Mr Trump declared he had won a “magnificent victory for the American people” after a night of high drama which saw him becoming the 47th President of the United States.

On Wednesday morning after winning the state of Wisconsin, Mr Trump reached 276 electoral college votes and officially won the election.

He told his supporters that “America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate” in a victory speech in Florida.

Overnight, he stormed the crucial swing states, with projected wins in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Georgia, and projected leads in the other four still to be called.

Addressing a campaign party in the last hour, Mr Trump pledged to “fight” for “every citizen” and promised the “golden age of America”.

He added: “This is a magnificent victory for the American people that will allow us to make America great again.”

Donald Trump claims ‘magnificent victory’ as he looks set for White House return

The race initially appeared neck-and-neck as Americans went to the polls.

But on a fast-moving night, Trump pulled ahead as predicted results came in from solidly red states including Florida, Texas and Alabama.

Harris’ support came from Democrat strongholds on the east and west coast in states like New York, Delaware and California.

Reaction from golfing

Rory McIlroy believes Donald Trump becoming US president for the second time could help “clear the way” for a peace deal in golf’s civil war.
The four-time major winner also said the potential involvement of Elon Musk, a supporter of Trump and the owner of social media platform X, could speed up the process.

SDLP leader raises concerns about ‘disheartening results’

The SDLP leader Claire Hanna has responded to the US election results and Trump’s victory.
The South Belfast and Mid Down MP said: “My thoughts today are largely with people in the United States who are fearful about what this might mean for their future.
“Donald Trump has repeatedly shown himself as someone with little respect for most people or the high office that he once again holds.
“It’s very disheartening that his divisive brand of politics has been so widely endorsed, but we acknowledge the clarity of the election outcome.”
She believes Trump’s win will have a global impact.
“There is serious concern about what this means for the United States, Gaza, Ukraine and indeed the world.
“In each, the most vulnerable will likely bear the brunt of the decisions the Trump administration will take.
“Many people will be feeling low today and I hope they will take care.
“The best response to this is to organise, and to think about the ways that we can help protect community cohesion, security and the planet.
“The SDLP will continue to champion inclusive, forwarding looking and internationalist politics.”

Trump passes 270 electoral college votes to become president

To be elected US president, candidates need to earn a minimum of 270 electoral college votes. Trump is now projected to win the state of Wisconsin, which would bring him across that threshold and give him 276 electoral college votes. This means he is set to become the 47th president of the United States.

TUV response

TUV leader Jim Allister has welcomed this morning’s news.
He said: “Donald Trump was better than the alternative of Harris.
“On the issues which impact Northern Ireland, I trust that the historic premise of the United States no taxation without representation – is something which could give him something to think about when it comes to us.
“As a man who respects borders, when he comes to deal with the United Kingdom I suspect he may be surprised we have a partitioning border down the middle of the UK and that may dissipate the inclination to do trade deals”.

PBP leader asks if NI politicians will attend Washington on St Patrick’s Day

People Before Profit leader Gerry Carroll has called on NI politicians to clarify their stance on a Trump administration in relation to Gaza.

He tweeted: “I suppose the obvious question for elected reps in the North, now including the First Minister, is what happens on St Patrick’s Day in Washington next year?”

Mr Carroll has openly campaigned for an end to the violence in Gaza and has criticised America’s arm sales in relation to the conflict.

He previously criticised members of Sinn Fein who visited America to celebrate St Patrick’s Day earlier this year despite calling for an end to violence in Gaza.

NI politicians debate news

The UUP’s Robbie Butler has hit out at any criticism of Republican voters in the US.
He tweeted: “I have friends in America who supported Trump and I’ve friends in America who supported Harris. To read the ridiculous comments from politicos and politicians here in NI dumb down the American electorate is worse than wrong. Given the state of politics and mostly non-politics in this country since 1998 and who people vote for here, we really shouldn’t cast stones. The US like here is complicated.”

However, SDLP Belfast councillor Séamas de Faoite responded by saying: “He’s a terrible human being and we shouldn’t sugarcoat it.”

SDLP MLA concerned about ‘destabilising’ impact

Matthew O’Toole, the leader of the opposition at Stormont, has said: “It looks like a clear margin. There will be lots of people waking up who are appalled and depressed by this news. Not to be too blunt about it but, there’s a diplomatic response and there’s an honest response. The honest response is that a lot of people are going to be very concerned about what this means, frankly for the whole world.

“One of the things I hope comes from this is a greater European partnership and a great sense of European co-operation. If he does the things he said he’s going to do, it will be destabilising for the entire world. I acknowledge that it looks like he has won this election. It asks very difficult questions for people in other parts of the world. I think of people in Gaza or Ukraine, who will be very concerned about what this means for American leadership in the world.”
