A third of Brits have purchased pyjamas specifically for outdoor wear, according to a poll.
The survey of 2,000 adults revealed that two fifths have also worn their PJs while performing everyday tasks such as gardening, driving, and grocery shopping.
Of those who own a pair, 32 per cent consider putting on a new set to be one of their favourite things. And a quarter of those who own a pyjama set confess they’d happily wear them all the time if they could.
The study found that 67 per cent of adults wear pyjamas, owning an average of four sets. However, it seems that 18 to 24 year olds are leading the ‘outdoor’ trend with 74 per cent having worn them outside.
The allure of such attire lies in their comfort (69 per cent), the cosy feeling they provide (56 per cent), and the relaxation they induce when worn (50 per cent). According to the survey it’s all about comfort, price, material, fit and style, while cotton is the most favoured material.
Peter Alexander, brand founder and creative director of Peter Alexander, who conducted the study, said: “The lines between the time we spend at work and the time we spend relaxing are blurring. This trend appears to extend to loungewear and everyday style.
“Wearing pyjamas outside is like bringing a slice of home wherever you go – cosy, carefree, and unapologetically yourself,” he added.
Almost a third admit there are times when they spend the entire day in their beloved sleepwear without changing. For 28 per cent, the first thing they do when they get home is change out of their work clothes and into their bedtime attire.
The survey also revealed that 25 per cent of those polled and their families have matching pyjamas, while 31 per cent own at least one Christmas-themed pair.
The study, conducted by OnePoll, found that the majority (60 per cent) tend to buy their own PJs, but 15 per cent rely on others to purchase them for them.
Peter Alexander commented: “Comfort isn’t just for the nighttime, so pyjamas shouldn’t be either. We are most relaxed and comfortable in our PJs, so why wouldn’t you want those feelings all day long.
“There’s joy in letting the outside world see you at your most relaxed – comfort doesn’t have to stay behind closed doors.”
