Brantford police hope the public can help identify two suspects following the theft of $1,200 worth of butter.

Two people were seen stealing the butter from a grocery store at Lynden Road and Wayne Gretzky Parkway just before 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 29. The suspects were both wearing all black clothing, including black baseball caps, and were seen leaving in a white van.

Butter seems to be a hot commodity. Guelph police have investigated seven large-scale thefts of butter in the last 10 months. Most recently, two males stole cases of butter valued at $936 and $958 in separate incidents at two different grocery stores in the north end of Guelph, fleeing out a receiving door and an emergency exit.

St. Thomas resident loses $1,500 in gift-card scam

St. Thomas police say a city resident lost approximately $1,500 in a scam involving gift cards.

It was Monday when police say the victim contacted them to report what had happened: A person they didn’t know contacted them, posing as an employee of a cellphone company, and said payment was needed for service upgrades, police said.

The victim was told to buy various gift cards and give the identifying details to the person who called them. Police say the investigation was ongoing.

Earlier this year, Ontario Provincial Police warned people against anyone calling and ordering them to buy gift cards.

“Only scammers will tell you to buy a gift card and give them the numbers off the back of the card,” OPP investigators said in a statement. “No legitimate business or government agency will ever tell you to buy a gift card to pay them.”
