Announcing one’s engagement on social media isn’t out of the ordinary nowadays.
LinkedIn, however, may not be the best place to do so.
James Watt, co-founder of Brewdog, chose LinkedIn — a social networking site for working professionals — to announce his engagement to ex-reality TV star and influencer Georgia Toffolo. Fitting for the site, Watt announced the engagement utilizing corporate lingo.
“I did a very cool deal at the end of last week. It is a long-term contractual agreement which looks poised for future growth. Both business and personal,” Watt wrote on LinkedIn, alongside a picture of himself and Toffolo, who showed off her engagement ring. “Lots of mutual investment.”
A screenshot of the announcement was shared on X by Ross McCafferty — and it went viral.
“LinkedIn is a disease,” McCafferty said in the post, which garnered more than 1.1 million views.
Users on the Elon Musk-owned social media site also criticized the LinkedIn posted.
“Even his proposal is a marketing stunt,” said one.

“I’m going to die of cringe,” wrote another.
“This is absolutely hilarious and iconic,” another weighed in.
“The divorce post is gonna slap; there might even be an infographic,” one chuckled.
While the announcement was panned on X, Toffolo shared the engagement news on Instagram to more positive feedback from her close to 2 million followers.
“James asked me to marry him. It really was the best moment of my life so far,” she said. “I never knew I could feel happiness like this. The easiest, quickest yes to being your wife.”
