One island just off the Cornish coast offers an idyllic retreat at any time of year, with the added allure of staying in a holiday home owned by the Royals.
The Isles of Scilly, a stunning archipelago made up of over 200 islands and rocks, lie 28 miles from Cornwall’s shores and have been under the Duchy of Cornwall since its inception in the early 14th century.
Out of these numerous isles, only five are inhabited: St Mary’s, Tresco, St Martin’s, St Agnes, and Bryher, each with its own unique charm. St Mary’s, the largest among them, boasts four holiday cottages under the ownership of the Duke of Cornwall, a title currently held by Prince William, reports the Express.
Describing the island, the Visit Isle of Scilly website states: “St. Mary’s is a great place to get out and about and explore, whether you’re here for just a few hours or indeed for a few days.”
It continues: “From walking through elm tree woods, discovering our Bronze Age monuments, finding a sheltered cove for a wild swim or enjoying our talented artists, make sure you the most of St. Mary’s.”
St Mary’s serves as the welcoming point to the Isles of Scilly, offering visitors the chance to venture to the other inhabited islands and even some of the uninhabited ones.
Among the available properties is Gatehouse Cottage, a charming residence dating back to the early 17th century and originally part of the island’s Elizabethan Garrison. With two bedrooms, the Gatehouse presents an ideal spot for a small family escape or a romantic break for two.
Just a stone’s throw away is the Guard House, which can accommodate four guests. When booked alongside its neighbour, it is ideal for larger groups. Steval, sitting within the same historic garrison, once served as the gun battery building.
A previous visitor was captivated by this exceptional property: “We were so lucky to have the most perfect weather and sat every evening with a glass of wine watching the sun set, listening to the sound of the sea. Steval is the ultimate get away from it all holiday cottage – thoroughly recommend.”
Rounding up the Royal holiday offerings is Tamarisk, which can house eight visitors. It is the most recent addition to the Duchy of Cornwall’s Isles of Scilly holiday spots, with the Duchy’s own site boasting: “Tamarisk is the new flagship addition to our Isles of Scilly collection, offering spacious and stunning accommodation.”
