I never got round to trying the popular Casamia, which added to my excitement of trying the new restaurant by the former head chef at the well-known restaurant. Other, on Cannon Street in Bedminster, opened at the beginning of October and when we visited last Friday evening it was full.
The restaurant has a modern, colourful presentation and, despite it only being small, does not cram dinners in. There are a few small tables and a larger communal table.
Giving the restaurant a try with four other friends, we were determined to try as much as we could from the menu, for reviewing purposes of course. The homemade crisps and chips (£5.50), served with a sweet pepper stay and aioli, were a total hit and we ended up ordering the dish again.

The aioli truly tasted like one I may get back in Barcelona, with plenty of garlic, while the satay sauce was also strong in flavour. We also got a couple of popcorn chickens (£7), which consisted of some small chicken meatballs and and some scratchings; we all loved this as well, with the scratchings being unexpected but so delicious.
The miso-glazed aubergine (£18), served with baba ganoush, a white cabbage salad, bazlama bread and roasted garlic butter, was delicate. The aubergine was very soft and melted in your mouth.
Another highlight of the meal were the triple-cooked potatoes with black garlic mayo (£6). The black garlic sauce was stunning – thicker and creamier than I expected – while the chips were cooked to perfection.
We also enjoyed the sea bass (£7.50), which was one of the fish specials, and appreciated the excellent presentation of all the different dishes. Unable to resist the temptation, we got the two desserts available; the pumpkin spiced doughnut (£4.50) and the honey crème brulee (£7).
Of the two, I preferred the doughnut, which was crispy and deliciously sweet. We accompanied our meal with two bottles of white wine, priced at £26 each.
Tucked away in the middle of South Bristol, Other may not be the obvious choice for a Friday meal out. However, the stunning food definitely made it worth the trip; Other can certainly be added to the long list of excellent restaurants Bristol is lucky enough to have.
Our meal for five came to £180.40, including a 10% service charge.
