The Taoiseach and Tanáiste have led tributes to the renowned former RTÉ news broadcaster David Davin-Power, who has died aged 72.

Mr Davin-Power helped launch the Morning Ireland radio programme 40 years ago, but will be most known as RTÉ’s Northern Editor at the time of the peace process. Mr Davin-Power also contributed to the Sunday Independent.

His passing follows the recent death of fellow RTÉ Northern correspondent, Tommie Gorman. Mr Davin-Power had been ill since March.

Hugely popular at Leinster House, where he was known as ‘DDP,’ he brought the political news into people’s living rooms until his retirement at the age of 65 in 2017.

Simon Harris paid tribute to Mr Davin-Power, saying it was with profound sadness that he had learned of his passing.

“As a journalist and broadcaster, David was a trusted name who was welcomed into homes across the country throughout his long career,” Simon Harris said.

“He was one of the first presenters of Morning Ireland, an accomplished Northern Editor of RTÉ at a key moment in history, a political correspondent who knew the Dáil inside-out, and in recent years, a witty and insightful columnist with the Sunday Independent.

“David was always a consummate professional, a thorough journalist, and a gentleman.

“He was a storyteller who was generous with his time, he was an interesting person who was interested in other people, and he was kind to those around him.”

David, who lived in Drumcondra, is survived by his wife Dearbhla and his five children. He was huge supporter of the Irish cricket team.

Tánaiste Micheál Martin said: “His was a life dedicated to public service broadcasting, from his time as RTE’s Northern Editor covering the peace process and the Good Friday Agreement, to his many years spent in Leinster House as Political Correspondent.

“Over four decades, David covered many of the stories that shaped modern Ireland. He was thorough and razor sharp in his questioning and analysis, but fair. He was always driven to get to the bottom of every story he worked on. I always enjoyed my engagements with David, and our conversations over the years.

“He had an outstanding ability to explain even the most complicated of stories, making the news accessible to all. His contribution to journalism was immense.

“My thoughts are with David’s family, friends and former colleagues at this difficult time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam. May he rest in peace.”
