• Hyundai Initium Concept with 650-km range previews production hydrogen SUV due 2025
  • The concept also shows off the automaker’s new ‘Art of Steel’ design language
  • The vehicle’s public debut is planned for the upcoming L.A. auto show, and Auto Guangzhou

Hyundai pulled the covers off of its Initium fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV) concept at the end of October, demonstrating that the company’s focus on hydrogen-fuel technology is unwavering despite the powertrain’s many obstacles, including the lack of refuelling infrastructure. Most importantly, the Initium concept, unveiled at Hyundai Motorstudio Goyang in South Korea, previews a production model Hyundai plans to launch in early 2025.

The Initium Concept targets a 650-km driving range, with a maximum output of 150 kW (or 201 hp); it aims to reach those numbers supported by features like aerodynamic wheels and low-rolling-resistance tires that maximize efficiency. The SUV also debuts Hyundai’s new “Art of Steel” design language, which it says blends durability and versatility. Equipped with 21-inch wheels and a roof rack, Initium combines popular practical urban features with outdoor functionality.

Inside, the concept provides a spacious layout, with reclining rear seats and wide doors for ease of access. Hyundai’s hydrogen-specific route planner simplifies locating fuelling stations, and the Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) feature enables external devices to be powered by the vehicle’s fuel cell. The automaker has also prioritized safety, as the Initium boasts a reinforced structure, nine airbags aimed at high collision-safety standards, and more.

Initium highlights Hyundai’s 27-year commitment to hydrogen innovation and its vision for a “hydrogen society.” The Initium’s rugged yet refined design will appeal to drivers who balance city and outdoor lifestyles, combining the robustness of an SUV with Hyundai’s hyper-efficient and clean fuel cell technology, the automaker says.

The Hyundai Initium Concept will make its public debut at the Los Angeles auto show and Auto Guangzhou in November 2024. At these gatherings, more details on the production version of the Initium Concept are expected, including timing and markets where that vehicle will be available for purchase.
