Alexander McCartney, from Lissummon outside Newry, is one of the most prolific paedophile ‘catfishes’ the world has seen to date.

He used fictitious online personas, or fake identity, to abuse children online.

He is a predator and sadist whose actions led to the death of an innocent little girl, Cimarron Thomas, and subsequently, her father.

Cimarron’s father Ben took his own life 18 months after Cimarron took hers. He died before the family knew she was a victim of Alexander McCartney.

The case is now one of the few recorded cases of manslaughter where perpetrator and victim never physically met.

He caused pain, distress and trauma to thousands of other children from across the world.

Having pleaded guilty to 185 charges, he has been given a tariff of 20 years in prison before he could be considered for release.

The Belfast Telegraph reporter Kurtis Reid, who was in the court, has been following this case and the reaction to it. He spoke to the BelTel.
