Gary Neville feels Erik ten Hag will unlikely remain Manchester United manager next week if they lose to Chelsea on Sunday.

It’s been a disastrous start to the campaign for Ten Hag with United picking up just 11 points from a possible 27 through nine games.

They’re just five points above the relegation zone following a controversial defeat to West Ham.

United missed a multitude of chances in the match at the London Stadium and were ultimately punished in the second half.

Crysencio Summerville opened the scoring for the hosts before Casemiro appeared to rescue a point.

But Ten Hag was left furious when VAR awarded a contentious penalty to West Ham in stoppage time with Jarrod Bowen stepping up to bury the spot-kick past Andre Onana.

The Dutchman criticised VAR for stepping in on what he felt was a ‘wrong decision’ and feels United have had their fair share of bad decisions go against them in recent weeks.

He also pointed to Bruno Fernandes’ red card against Tottenham, which was overturned on appeal.

But it’s the performances and lack of goals from United that are causing club legend Neville real concern.

The Red Devils have a break from the Premier League this week when they face Leicester City in the EFL Cup.

But Neville feels the most important match of Ten Hag’s tenure as United boss will be this Sunday against Chelsea.

And if United ended up suffering another defeat, Neville feels the board will have no choice but to sack Ten Hag.

“I always think that anybody that’s half-decent, that can play, will beat this United team,” he said.

“I just think anybody that’s half-decent, that puts their shoulders up and has the quality, which Chelsea have got in parts of the pitch, and Man Utd are in danger.

“I don’t think there can be another defeat next Sunday at Old Trafford. I genuinely don’t.

“I think it’s getting to that point now where there is a real worry.

“I’m worried because the results, the lack of goals, the lack of performances, it’s stacking up week after week after week, and there will be some sort of reasons given [on Sunday] – I’m not going to say excuses – but reasons given around missing chances.

“But they keep missing chances. These are the players that have been recruited over the last couple of seasons mainly.

“It’s a sobering time because the feeling was after winning the FA Cup final and investing well, having a more smooth transfer window, that now it’s looking like here we are again at that moment where it’s going badly wrong.

“It’s getting to that point where it’ll become unbearable, the pressure in this next week or two around Erik ten Hag.

“Just purely the position in the league, they are 14th. Manchester United… I mean, it’s Manchester United.

“He can’t be 14th in the league. He can be after one or two games, maybe, but not after nine, not after 10.”
