King Frederik of Denmark’s affair scandal could “flare up again” according to a royal expert.

Rumours that the King of Denmark had an affair were sparked a year ago when the Danish King was seen on a night out in Madrid with Mexican model and actress Genoveva Casanova.

The then Crown Prince’s wife, Mary, was attending royal business in New York, over 5,000km away.

Danish royal commentator Anna Thygesen has now claimed that the ‘Madrid scandal’ will continue to damage the Danish Royal Family’s reputation.

She said: “It was a huge case, and in principle it will never be forgotten either. It will lie lurking just below the surface for many years.

“It doesn’t take much for it to flare up again.”

A second Danish royal commentator and historian, Lars Hovbakke, agrees and calls for the palace to be open to end speculation.

He said: “But the Royal House has since the beginning clearly said that it was a private matter, which they are not obliged to inform about, and they are not visibly changing their position.”

He added that the only way to “stop the rumours” might be for King Frederik and the Danish Royal Family to be fully transparent.

The Danish Palace has referred to the incident as a “private visit” but made no further comments.

Both royal commentators have warned that the Danish King must proceed with caution as his reputation with the public is damaged, especially in Spain, but agreed that the first year following a scandal is typically the toughest, and it might ease for the royal couple.

In October 2023, a Spanish magazine published images of Casanova with the then Crown Prince at a Pablo Picasso exhibit, claiming the pair had a private dinner and visited Casanova’s apartment.
