An expert dog trainer has shared his insights on the three breeds that he suggests prospective dog owners might want to avoid.

Speaking on his popular TikTok channel, American Standard K9, which has a staggering 3.6 million followers, trainer Garret Wing listed the “top three XL dog breeds we don’t recommend”.

Garret ranked the Tibetan Mastiff in third place, describing it as a “monster of a dog” that can weigh around 68kg and reach heights of 26 inches.

He remarked: “[It] is capable of killing an entire pack of wolves. So do you think you need that in your home with small children? Not necessarily.”

Additionally, he mentioned their difficult-to-manage temperament, noting that their stubbornness can make training tough, before concluding: “Beautiful animals, probably not for you,” reports Surrey Live.

The Great Dane came in second on Garret’s list. He recognized them as “really sweet dogs” that have the potential to be “amazing pets”, but also highlighted the reality that their enormous size can significantly alter your living situation.

With the potential to weigh as much as 91kg and grow to a height of 32 inches.

Garret explained: “You have to basically rearrange your whole house, even when it comes getting a crate and taking them places. Where’s your coffee table, and where are you going to put your cup? We’re talking about a dog that is just too big for most homes.”

Top of the list, Garret identified the Cane Corso as the “number one dog breed we do not recommend for families”, noting that these dogs can tip the scales at roughly 50kg and stand as tall as 28 inches.

He expanded on this, saying: “That is too much dog for about 99.9% of folks. And that’s coming from us, not only as professional dog trainers, but owners of the Cane Corso. They are absolute battle tanks and you don’t need that in your suburban neighbourhood.”
