George Russell has revealed he’s ‘okay’ after the Mercedes star was involved in a terrifying crash ahead of the Mexican Grand Prix.

The Silver Arrows driver collided with a Tecpro barrier in FP2 on Saturday, just days after he’d been involved in a crash at the United States Grand Prix.

Russell stepped out of the cockpit holding his ribs but was cleared following a medical inspection.

Speaking in the aftermath of the crash, the 26-year-old has now revealed that he’s ‘okay’ after being ‘a bit winded’.

“I’m okay. I feel a bit winded after that one,” he said.

“Honestly, I don’t really know what happened. The car just started bouncing along the ground, and before I even had a chance to catch it, it was already spinning.

“I tried to take the same line in cutting that corner, and for whatever reason, on this occasion in FP2, the thing just started going on me.

“A lot of work for the guys again. It seems like it’s just one thing after another at the moment. It’s frustrating because in FP1 we were really strong, really fast.”

Russell also downplayed concerns that the Mercedes car isn’t good enough to compete with their rivals.

“No, I don’t think that’s a fair assessment,” he continued.

“Because having had a few days to review everything from Austin, I think it’s fair to say we were sailing a bit too close to the wind with how we set our car up.

“We were setting it up really aggressive, really close to the ground, and it clearly bit Lewis [Hamilton] and I over the course of Saturday and Sunday.

“But when we could get around the lap, we showed real signs of strong performance.

“I think this weekend in Mexico is going to be a good opportunity to see across the two cars.

“Obviously we only had one, we’ve only got one upgrade this weekend, and as I was the one who damaged it last week, Lewis got the choice and elected to use the new one.

“So that will be intriguing. But the sport is a bit difficult to understand at the moment.

“I don’t think anybody would have expected Ferrari’s performance last weekend, especially with the lack of upgrades they brought.”

Mercedes chief Toto Wolff, meanwhile, doesn’t believe the chassis on Russell’s car needs to be replaced.

He did admit, however, that the vehicle had suffered ‘serious damage’.

“I think we can keep the old chassis, but everything else has to go out,” he confirmed.

“The engine has to come out, the gearbox has to be checked and then everything else. Two corners of the car are completely gone. So it’s serious damage.”

“We’re in serious trouble. We are all struggling to stay within the budget cap and of course we had a bad accident with Kimi [Antonelli] at Monza. Then the second one with George last week [in Austin] and now again this week.”
