Newry, Mourne and Down District Council has used an image of a fireworks display to promote its Halloween activities — despite Newry not having any fireworks this year.

The local authority has, however, provided financial and promotional support to other firework displays in the district, including Warrenpoint, Kilkeel, Downpatrick, and Crossmaglen.

The result is that anyone in Newry who wants to see a fireworks display will have to travel elsewhere.

Promoting this year’s Halloween public activities, Newry Mourne and Down District Council (NMDDC) Chairperson Pete Byrne said: “We are excited to be part of a wide range of Halloween activities taking place across the district.

“There is truly something for everyone happening throughout the week and on Halloween night itself.

“From fireworks to fancy dress, street entertainment and spooky storytelling, people are sure to find something they will enjoy and maybe get a few scares along the way.”

The council was asked to clarify why there were no fireworks for the city and if it had supported other areas’ displays.

A spokesperson said: “In 2020 the council moved away from firework displays given the potential negative impact they can have on animals and vulnerable people.

“The current format has been developed over the years based on feedback from families and has shown to be very positively received with an estimated 4,000 attending last year’s event.

“The council has agreed to provide funding to a number of community groups to deliver Halloween events.

“These groups are encouraged to look at alternative ways of celebrating their Halloween events such as quiet fireworks or lighting/laser displays.”

The spokesperson added: “Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is running a ‘Halloween Spooky Spectacular’ for families from 6pm to 9pm on Thursday 31 October in Newry, which will include a funfair, food village, live music, Halloween crafts and storytelling.”
