Wicked, the musical is based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which is based on Frank L. Baum’s 1900 novel The Wizard of Oz and the 1939 film adaptation of the same name.

There are musical theatre fans who are eagerly awaiting the upcoming Wicked movie — I’m not that girl.

I’m a deep musical theatre nerd and have seen Wicked over 30 times. On the one hand, I’m happy it’s getting attention and will be more accessible for viewers beyond stage productions. On the other hand, I don’t generally like musical movies, because singing on screen seems forced — especially when CGI takes centre stage.

Wicked the movie has been a work in progress for at least eight years, as there were talks about it in 2016. Since then, the stage musical celebrated its 20th anniversary, debuting on Broadway in 2003. Over the years the movie has garnered a lot of buzz. All the excitement is leading to a of merch and exciting brand collaborations.

I love seeing the creativity of these partnerships and the opportunity to sport more theatre merchandise. Here are some of the Wicked collaborations that I’m more excited about than the movie itself.

Wicked collaborations

Favourite piece: I have the Defygravity heels and like how the Wicked theme is subtle but present. They’re also pretty comfortable, considering they’re heels. They have Aldo’s signature “Pillow Walk” which is a much-appreciated padded sole.

LEGO X Wicked

Favourite set: I like the Elphaba & Glinda Figures, pictured above because the two witches are most visible. It’s also 558 pieces, versus the Welcome to Emerald City set which has 945.

Crocs X Wicked

Favourite pair: I prefer the Wicked Elphaba Classic Clog over the Wicked Glinda Siren Clog because they look much more comfortable.

Rebecca Minkoff X Wicked

Favourite bag: I prefer the Edie Flap Shoulder With Wicked Studs over the G Top Handle With Crystal because it’s more versatile, but they’re both beauties.

Patrick Starrr X Wicked (the musical!)

Favourite feature: I don’t know a lot about makeup but I appreciate that this Patrick Starrr highlighter features the imagery from Wicked the musical.

OPI X Wicked

Favourite shade: Nine times out of 10, I’m an Elphaba girl, but Ga-linda wins this round. Green is my favourite colour but when it comes to nail polish, I like it pretty in pink.

Voluspa X Wicked

Favourite feature: I haven’t tried these candles but appreciate their subtle Wicked theme and overall sophistication. I’d like these candles but fear I wouldn’t light them because I’d want to keep them pristine in their pretty jars.

Mattel X Wicked

Favourite doll: I want to say Glinda or Nessarose to veer from expectation, but I love my green girl, Elphaba.

Monopoly X Wicked

Favourite property: Ozdust Ballroom. Overall, I love the attention to detail in this set — so many references. However, I can see myself singing “Let’s go down to the Ozdust Ballroom” throughout the game which would be entertaining for me.

H&M X Wicked

Favourite piece: The Embroidered-Motif Asymmetric Dress seems to be the most subtle piece in all the collaborations, I just really like the dress.

Favourite piece: The Mini Sophie is a small black velvet bag — I appreciate its versatility.

Starbucks X Wicked
(Only available in stores)

Favourite cup: I like the Defy Gravity cup, above. The font is big and bold, which is perfect for a Wicked cup. I don’t love that I can’t buy the collection online and will have to go from Starbucks to Starbucks to find what I’m looking for.

Roots X Wicked
(Available Nov. 7, 2024)

Favourite piece: I received I preview of the collection but am looking forward to seeing what it looks like in person when the collection is released on Nov. 7.
