A renowned gynaecologist has explained one of the most common symptoms of menopause and what action you should be taking. D. Michael Krychman, überlube, said menopause has many symptoms including weight gain, insomnia, mood swings, hot flushes, and vaginal dryness – something that is experienced by around 54% of postmenopausal women.

And despite how common these symptoms are, conversations about menopause — especially in relation to sexual health — are often lacking. Dr Krychman said: ” As women enter perimenopause and menopause, the body undergoes a sharp decline in oestrogen (a 95% reduction to be exact), the hormone responsible for maintaining vaginal health.

“Oestrogen helps keep the vaginal tissues lubricated, elastic, and healthy and therefore its reduction can lead to thinning of the vaginal walls and decreased natural lubrication.”

He added “Vaginal dryness is one of the most common complaints among postmenopausal women. It’s not just about discomfort during sex. It can affect a woman’s day-to-day life, from feeling irritation during exercise to experiencing pain while sitting for extended periods.”

According to Dr. Krychman: “Lubricants provide immediate relief by adding moisture and reducing friction during sexual activity. But they also serve a broader role in helping women feel more comfortable in their bodies.

“Not all lubricants are created equal. It’s important for women to experiment with different types to find what feels most comfortable for them.”

Lubricants come in various forms, including water-based, silicone-based, and oil-based, allowing women to choose one that best suits their personal preferences and needs. Water-based lubricants are generally the most versatile and widely available, but silicone-based options last longer and are especially useful for women experiencing significant dryness.

Dr Krychman said: “Using lubricant not only enhances comfort but also helps rebuild confidence and enjoyment.”
