Federal Revenue Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau will run in next year’s mayoral election in Sherbrooke.
The MP for the riding of Compton-Stanstead confirmed Monday she will finish her term in Ottawa but not seek re-election, running instead as an independent mayoral candidate in the Sherbrooke municipal election.
Bibeau was first elected in 2015 and served as minister of the francophonie, international development, agriculture and has held the revenue portfolio since July 2023.
Évelyne Beaudin, incumbent mayor of Sherbrooke, has said she will not seek re-election in 2025.
Quebec’s municipal elections will be held Nov. 2, 2025. The general federal election will be held Oct. 20, 2025, at the latest. The federal vote could occur sooner should the minority government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau fall in a confidence vote or an early election is called.
Marie-Claude Bibeau’s husband, Bernard Sévigny, was mayor of Sherbrooke from 2009 to 2017.
