Former captain Steven Davis claims Rangers ‘ran out of ideas’ after losing further ground in the Scottish Premiership title race.

With leaders Celtic and Aberdeen cancelling each other out on Saturday, Phillippe Clement’s side travelled to Kilmarnock looking to close the gap at the top.

However Marley Watkins’ 87th minute winner on a day when Rangers could only muster three shots on target, left former midfield Davis frustrated.

“It’s a disappointing day from a Rangers point of view,” the Cullybackey native said on Sky Sports.

“Congratulations to Kilmarnock, I don’t think there was a lot in the game, but Kilmarnock took their chance when it came along. From a Rangers point of view they didn’t ask enough questions of them, lacked intensity and didn’t really do enough in the game to warrant taking something.”

The artificial surface as Rugby Park has come in for criticism, but former Northern Ireland skipper Davis blasted that out of the water.

“I think you expect more. The surface is the surface, you can’t use that as an excuse,” he said.

“It obviously does slow the game down at times but you want to ask more questions as an attacking team. I don’t think Kilmarnock had to work too hard today and dealt with everything Rangers did.”

There was a degree of controversy with Rangers arguing over the award of a throw-in that eventually led the winning goal that leaves Rangers six points behind Celtic and Aberdeen in the table.

“I can understand the frustration in that situation but there’s enough time to deal with it, you still shouldn’t concede from that position” Davis added.

“It was a disappointing day all round from a Rangers perspective, I just felt they ran out of ideas in terms of how to create opportunities.

“I felt they lacked a little bit of intensity and lacked belief as game wore on and Kilmarnock got stronger as the game wore on.

“You felt that they’d turned the corner after the disappointment of the Old Firm (game) and started to build momentum going into the international break and came here with an opportunity to pick up three points and it just wasn’t a good enough performance.”
