A man has described going “to hell and back” after being poisoned by his partner’s GP son in disguise as a nurse.

Patrick O’Hara, 72, said his arm “felt like it was on fire” when he was administered poison under the pretence of a “Covid vaccine”.

Despite pain occurring within seconds, O’Hara was assured by Dr Thomas Kwan, 53, that it was merely an allergic reaction.

The GP from Sunderland, who had built up a strong knowledge of toxic chemicals and stored poisons in his garage, has admitted attempted murder and is due to be sentenced at Newcastle Crown Court.

The 72-year-old victim has since revealed that his relationship with Kwan’s mother, Wai King, has come to an end and he has since moved out of his Newcastle home.

The retired environmental analyst was accustomed to regular health checks since he worked with asbestos, so was unfazed when he received a letter he believed to be from the NHS for a home checkup.

Recounting the “instant, excruciating pain” on January 22 this year, O’Hara told the court: “This is a date that I will never forget for as long as I shall live.”

Once O’Hara was admitted to the high dependency unit in Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary, he was diagnosed with the flesh-eating disease necrotising fasciitis, undergoing three plastic surgeries in addition to a course of physiotherapy.

He has been diagnosed with PTSD and has referred to himself as a “shell of an individual”, suffering from hair loss, weight loss and hallucinations.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Fearing Kwan’s potential release, the grandfather said that he was “petrified” that he will harm his loved ones with a vindictive act, causing his thoughts “spiral out of control”.

He said: “I genuinely feel as if I have been to hell and back.”

Following police searches of Kwan’s home, officers discovered a picture of the accused wearing a wig, fake beard and a moustache, alongside a fake ID for “Raj Patel” stored on his computer.

Additionally, the criminal used spyware to record emails and searches on his mother’s computer, as well as images via its camera.

Dr Thomas KwanA GP from Sunderland has been accused of attempting to murder his mother’s partner by injecting him with a poisoned fake Covid booster jabPA

On January 22, CCTV cameras recorded Kwan arriving at a Premier Inn in Newcastle, wearing a hat, glasses, gloves and face mask. Later, he travelled to his mother’s house to inject O’Hara.

At the scene of the crime, Kwan took blood and urine samples, and then injected his victim with the poison, before “leaving the premises in something of a rush”.

The court had heard that Kwan’s motive was behind an inheritance issue with his mother, after she planned to leave her property to O’Hara and not her children.

Prosecutor Peter Makepeace KC concluded that the attempted murder was driven by financial gain and the guilty party will be sentenced at a later date.
