Developers have applied for planning permission to build 434 flats behind Temple Meads as well as new shops, restaurants and bars. The 13-storey apartment blocks are planned for Silverthorne Lane, a formerly industrial area undergoing a major regeneration.

Studio Hive is hoping to get approval from Bristol City Council for the new flats, which would be split across three buildings. The apartments would be build-to-rent, meaning none would be available to buy.

A lower and upper ground floor would include over 1,400 square metres of retail, food and beverage and office space. The development would create a “connected and characterful destination from the regeneration of a post-industrial city centre site”.

In planning documents, architects said: “The Silverthorne Lane site represents a unique opportunity to revitalise a neglected site while connecting it with its local surroundings. The development will showcase a mix of uses encompassing residential, work and leisure spaces.

“High quality architecture and usable open spaces will serve to create a vibrant community that will be stitched into the newly created university quarter, creating a permeable public realm, focusing on the Feeder Canal.”

Planning permission was granted two years ago for a similar scheme on the same site, but with 371 homes instead of 434. Student flats and a new high school are also planned elsewhere on Silverthorne Lane, with a new University of Bristol campus under construction nearby.

The site was recently cleared of its existing buildings, and used to be home to iron works. Public access to the north side of the Feeder Canal would be created, as well as a potential new ferry stop and footbridge. No date has been set yet for when the plans will go before councillors on a development control committee for their approval.
