An expert is warning drivers they could be at risk of fines of up to £4,000 if they fall foul of this autumn and winter occurrence. They could racking up multiple fines without even realising, he said.

As the weather turns colder the leaves start to change colour before falling from trees. While this is a normal part of the seasons changing it could leave you vulnerable to breaking certain rules unknowingly.

Damian Maginn, car expert and director of Wessex Vans, revealed some of the hidden financial problems autumn leaves are causing drivers parked in certain spots. He advised that drivers may unwittingly park on double yellow lines if they are obscured by leaves.

A standard double yellow parking fine is £70, although will vary depending on your local council. If you leave your car somewhere for a 12-week period without noticing the lines as a result of the debris, this could total as much as £4,000 he said.

Damian explained: “Leaves can cover important road markings, potentially resulting in regular fines of up to £4,200 from the start of October to December if you aren’t careful. A double yellow line parking fine is usually £70, but can be reduced by 50 percent if paid within 14 days, depending on the local authority. However these soon would rack up, with £70 a day for five days a week, over 12 weeks equalling over £4,000”

Therefore, he recommended parking away from trees if possible. He said: “To protect your vehicle and avoid fines, park away from trees whenever possible and consider using a car cover. A simple kick of the leaves can make sure you’re not accidentally parked on a double yellow line.”

Damian added that you should never stop on double yellow lines, even if you are quickly dropping someone off. “While it’s fine to stop briefly to pick up or drop off passengers, double yellow lines are a clear indication that waiting is prohibited at all times, so make sure that your stop doesn’t disrupt traffic,” he added.

“Drivers should always assume that parking is not allowed unless there are specific local signs indicating otherwise. While there are some exceptions for loading and unloading, it’s important for drivers to act quickly and efficiently. Time limits apply, and continuous loading is required to avoid any penalties.

“For Blue Badge holders, vehicles may park on double yellow lines for up to three hours, but they should display the badge correctly and make sure they are following any local restrictions that may overrule this privilege. Parking regulations may differ on weekends and bank holidays, so always remember to check local signs and don’t just assume that the absence of traffic means a lack of parking rules.”
