A man has been arrested in relation to an ‘altercation’ involving Belfast City Council staff and a member of the public, which happened on Thursday morning.

Police confirmed on Friday that a 63-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm in connection with an assault on a man in Great Victoria Street.

Police said the incident occurred in the city centre area at around 3.40am on October 10.

The man in question remains in custody.

The PSNI also previously said it is working alongside Belfast City Council in investigating video footage that shows what appears to be a fight between three council workers and what one onlooker has described as an ‘intoxicated’ man.

Inspector Hawkins said: “We are aware of footage of this incident circulating on social media. We are assessing the content of this footage, and have been liaising with Belfast City Council partners as the investigation continues.”

The council told the Belfast Telegraph it is “aware of footage circulating online which appears to show council staff involved in an altercation with a member of a public”.

The spokesperson added: “We are looking into this urgently and have no further comment to make at this time.”

Lisnasharragh councillor Séamas de Faoite noted that he is “very concerned about the apparent use of a baton in the video clip that has circulated on social media”.

“I have engaged with senior council officers to ensure that all of the facts are established with haste, so that Belfast residents can continue to rely on council services on a daily basis without fault,” the SDLP representative continued.

The clip in question has been shared widely on social media, and appears to show three council workers in uniform approach a man who is lying on the ground in front of a street cleaning machine.

One of the men in uniform then proceeds to hit the man with a bar.

The footage lasts for around 30 seconds.

Another separate clip now also circulating now appears to show moments before, in which one of the street cleaners pushes the man to the ground after he stands in front of one of their vehicles.

At the end of this video, the man gets up and runs down Amelia Street.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said that it had received no reports in relation to it.
