Residents in small homes or flats will be all too familiar with the challenge of a lack of storage space.

The problem often results in belongings being scattered about, creating not only a mess but also potentially impacting mental well-being negatively as well. A Dr Beckmann survey suggests this issue is quite widespread across UK dwellings, indicating almost half of participants struggled to store all their possessions within their living spaces.

However, the TV decluttering guru, Mr. Carrington, has been brought on board by Dr Beckmann to provide essential guidance and suggestions for genius and effective storage solutions.

He highlighted: “When our homes get smaller in size, every inch of space matters, and keeping things organised can be a challenge. Over filled storage units can become cluttered and chaotic leading to increased levels of stress.”

Mr. Carrington, sharing his expertise for optimising limited room, suggested taking advantage of an everyday household feature – doors. His advice was clear: “The back of the door offers tons of potential storage. Use an over-the-door rack to store your shoe collection.”

Furthermore, he recommended the use of door backs for additional storage: “You can also hang wicker baskets to the back of doors, which can be used for accessories like umbrellas, making every inch of the room work harder.”

Similarly, he suggested utilising the space above your door by adding a shelf, which can become an unexpected storage location, reports the Express. He commented: “The ledge created by the door frame is a perfect spot to add a shelf, offering bonus storage for books or other decorative items, freeing up other areas in your room.”

In the kitchen, too, if you’re strapped for worktop area, putting up an extra shelf could prove invaluable. Mr Carrington advised: “Bulky appliances clutter countertops but finding shelves designed to fit over your microwave, toaster, or kettle, will create a handy spot. Make sure to double-check with the manufacturer before purchase to ensure health and safety measures are taken.”

And when it comes to a clever way to tidy away those small bits and bobs that seem to scatter all over the place, he’s got a nifty suggestion. He pointed out: “Picnic baskets make excellent storage containers. Use them throughout your home to store anything from socks, shoes, towels and even plates.

“They’re breathable and lightweight, and if you get a few in varying sizes, you can stack them to save even more space.”
