One person has been taken to hospital after a two vehicle collision in Co Down.

The crash occurred on the Portaferry Road near the junction with the Ballybryan Road, close to Newtownards.

Firefighters used specialist cutting equipment to rescue one person from the crash, while five casualties in total were treated at the scene.

The collision was reported shortly after 1.20pm and police currently remain at the scene. The road remains closed.

A spokesperson for the NI Ambulance Service (NIAS) said it received a 999 call and despatched two emergency ambulances, an ambulance officer and the charity Air Ambulance NI.

“Following initial assessment and treatment at scene, one patient was taken to Ulster Hospital by ambulance,” added the NIAS.

The NI Fire and Rescue Service said three fire appliances attended the scene.

“Firefighters were called to reports of a two vehicle road traffic collision on Portaferry Road, Greyabbey,” said a spokesperson.

“Firefighters used specialist cutting equipment to rescue one casualty. All five casualties were transferred to the care of NIAS.”
