David Beckham scored one of the most iconic England goals of all time against Greece in 2001 and the Three Lions will wear the same all-white kit from that match against the Greeks this week.

It’s just over 23 years since Beckham sent England to the 2002 World Cup with a stoppage-time free-kick against Greece that caused a frenzy up and down the country.

England were facing the prospect of an awkward play-off against Ukraine after trailing Greece 2-1 at Old Trafford.

But Beckham stepped up when it mattered most for his country in the dying seconds of the match to score the most important England goal of the century.

A waxwork of Beckham in the all-white Umbro England kit was put up in Madame Tussaud’s the following year.

England have only played Greece once since that all-important result 23 years ago – a friendly back in 2006 that the Three Lions won 4-0.

They face the Greeks once again this week in the Nations League with both sides on the same points after two group games.

And England will be wearing an all-white kit against Greece this time around just like Beckham and co did back in 2001.

England’s current home strip features blue shorts, but they will swap them for white at Wembley on Thursday evening.

Greece will be wearing all-blue, just as they did 23 years ago as well.

The match will also be a chance for Lee Carsley to further his chances of being given the England head coach job on a permanent basis.

The FA hired Carsley as an interim boss after Gareth Southgate left in the summer.

Several managers have been linked with the job, but it’s been reported that they will make a final decision next month.

It means Carsley has four more matches to prove himself as the ideal candidate, starting with Greece on Thursday.

Dominic Solanke was given his first England call-up in seven years by Carsley for this international break.

But his Tottenham team-mate James Maddison wasn’t selected, along with Eberechi Eze and Harry Maguire.

Carsley’s main issue will be figuring out how to utilise England’s array of attacking midfielders with Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden all fighting to start.

And he’s hinted that all three could viably start against Greece on Thursday.
