The Edmonton Oilers just went through what will go down for many as one of the best Game 7 battles in their lifetime.
But what are the best series-deciding matches in all of sports? Amazon MGM Studios has cooked up a pretty thrilling list, and the dynasty-era Oilers feature prominently.
After winning their first two Stanley Cups in five games each, the Oilers made the finals again in 1987, facing the Philadelphia Flyers, a rematch of the 1985 final.
The trailer for the series, which includes the 1987 final as well as the 1994 Vancouver Canucks-New York Rangers thriller, dropped Oct. 8.
Co-executive produced by Oilers legend Mark Messier, perhaps it’s no coincidence that the Orange and Blue are included, but it’s hard to argue against the Oilers’ appearance.
The club won the Presidents’ Trophy that season, with 106 points. Three of the top four scorers played for the Oilers. But Philly didn’t make it easy.
Eventual Conn Smythe-winner Ron Hextall helped even things up against the Oilers’ hot scoring.
The Final opened with 4-2 and 3-2 Oilers wins at Northlands and then a split in Philadelphia as the Flyers took Game 3 5-3 before the Oilers put Philly on the ropes 4-1 in Game 4. The Flyers then won a pair of one-goal games, 4-3 in Edmonton and 3-2 at home, to set up Game 7 at Northlands Coliseum.
The Oilers went down early on a 5-on-3 penalty, allowing the Flyers to open the scoring for the first time in the series. Despite a 40-save performance by Hextall, Messier, Jari Kurri and Glenn Anderson potted goals in the first, second and third periods, respectively, to put a stamp on the Oilers dynasty.
