Police are investigating two street fights in Co Armagh that involved schoolgirls and adult women.

Footage of the incident, which has been shared widely on social media, showed two altercations taking place simultaneously along Market Street in Lurgan town centre on Monday afternoon.

It is understood those involved are from two different families.

In one altercation, a woman can be seen lying on the ground before another women grabs her jacket and strikes her a number of times to the head.

Meanwhile, two schoolgirls, who are wearing their school uniforms, are involved in another altercation.

Staff from a local chemist step in to break up the fights in an attempt to calm the situation.

One of the girls is a pupil at Lismore College in Craigavon and the other attends Brownlow Integrated College, also in Craigavon.

In a joint statement, the principals of both schools said: “Lismore College and Brownlow Integrated College have been informed of an incident that took place on the afternoon of Monday, October 7, 2024, on High Street Lurgan.

“Both schools are working in partnership with all external agencies that are involved.

“The incident is not in keeping with the ethos promoted by both schools.”

A spokesperson for the PSNI said police received a report of an altercation in the Market Street area of Lurgan around 3.50pm on Monday.

It was reported that two children and two adults had been involved in an “assault”.

The PSNI added it was aware of footage of the incident circulating on social media and reminded the public to be responsible if sharing it.

“Enquiries are ongoing,” said the police. “Anyone with information should contact police on 101 and quote reference 1189 07/10/24.”
