A police appeal has been issued in relation to a car parked close to the area in which Kyle McDermott was assaulted in Ballymagorry on Sunday night.

The 24- year-old man died following a serious assault that is being treated as a murder in Co Tyrone at the weekend.

In a new appeal, police investigating his murder said the occupant of a nearby car is believed to have captured video footage of the incident.

Detective Inspector Hazel Miller said: “I am making a specific and direct appeal to the occupants of a blue-coloured car. This car was parked on the Victoria Road, near the scene of the altercation, and we believe that an occupant captured mobile footage of the incident.

Detective Inspector Miller continued: “Kyle, at just 24 years old, was a young man in his prime when his life was cut short, leaving a family and friends heartbroken.

“I am appealing, in the first instance, to the driver and passengers of that car to please contact us on 101 as soon as possible, as your support could greatly assist our enquiries.

“I will also take the opportunity to extend a reminder to anyone who as in the Victoria Road area on Sunday night between 6pm and midnight to come forward with any information or footage you may have. Please quote reference 1670 of 06/10/24.”

Tributes have been widely paid to the man, including by Independent Councillor Jason Barr who is a relative.

“A smile that will never be seen again. Kyle didn’t deserve this,” he posted on social media.

“Please keep Kyle’s partner Chloe, his mum Claire, dad Stephen, sister Stephanie and brothers Arden and Sheehan and our family in your prayers. Devastated beyond words.”

Funeral arrangements for the man will be announced in the coming days.

It’s understood Mr McDermot was involved in an incident with a man outside his property who had kicked down his bin, before being seriously assaulted.

He later died in Altnagelvin Hospital in the early hours of this morning.

The A5 was subsequently closed between its junctions with Leckpatrick Road, Ballymagorry and Woodend Road, Strabane while police investigated the incident.
