A single-vehicle crash has sparked chaos on the M4 this morning, Tuesday, October 8. The rush-hour crash on the M4 eastbound saw traffic at a standstill between junction 18 and 17.

Major delays are reported and miles of tailbacks have formed. There are now delays of 60 minutes on the M4 eastbound, near Bath, with disruption expected to continue throughout the day.

The single-vehicle crash has badly damaged the central reservation. One lane of the M4 will be remain closed to allow the barrier to be repaired.

National Highways has warned that there will be severe delays for much for the day as the central reservation has been ‘substantially damaged’ in the crash.

It said: “There are 60 minute delays on the M4 eastbound between J18 #Tomarton and J17 #Chippenham in #Wiltshire.

“This is due to a single car collision that has substantially damaged the central reservation. 1 lane (of 3) will remain closed until the barrier can be repaired.”

Roads and traffic monitoring site Inrix reported the crash just after 10am. It said: “All traffic being temporarily held and stationary traffic due to accident on M4 Eastbound from J18 A 46 (Bath / Tomarton) to J17 A350 (Chippenham).”

It is not thought that anyone has sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash. Emergency services have been contacted for further information.
