Qantas, Australia’s flagship carrier, has issued an apology after an R-rated film was inadvertently played on all screens during a recent Sydney to Tokyo flight.
The incident, which happened last week, was caused by a technical glitch in the inflight entertainment system, preventing passengers from selecting individual movies.
The airline confirmed that crew members were limited to a specific list of films that could be shown across all screens.
Following requests from several passengers, a particular movie was chosen for the entire flight, leading to unexpected and uncomfortable viewing for many on board.

Rated R for explicit content, the movie featured “language throughout, sexual material and brief graphic nudity”.
A passenger reported on social media that the film contained “a lot of sexting” with visible on-screen text messages.
The situation was particularly uncomfortable for families with children on board with passengers unable to pause or turn off their screen.

Qantas crew members initially attempted to rectify the issue for passengers who did not wish to view the film.
However, when it became clear that individual screen control was not possible, they switched to a children’s movie.
The airline stated that cabin crew apologised to passengers, “particularly those who had complained about the content”.
A Qantas spokesperson acknowledged the unsuitable nature of the film for a whole-flight screening.
