Police have arrested a 22-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman after reports that two cars belonging to health care workers were broken into in west Belfast.

Shortly before 1am police responded to reports that a man and woman had smashed a window of a vehicle on Grosvenor Road in west Belfast.

Units from west and north Belfast assisted by a police dog unit raced to the scene where they made the two arrests yards from the vehicle.

On arrival, police discovered a second car had been broken into a short distance away.

It’s understood the healthcare workers were working in the nearby Royal Victoria Hospital at the time.

A police spokesperson said: “Police in west Belfast have made two arrests following a report that people were seen smashing windows on two vehicles on Grosvenor Road at around 12.55am on Monday, 7th October.

“Officers attended the scene and located two suspects nearby.

“A 38-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of theft, criminal damage and vehicle interference.

“A 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of the same offences alongside resisting arrest and two counts of assault on police.

“Both persons remain in custody at this time.”
