Marcus Rashford has been dubbed ‘very lucky’ by Jamie Carragher after avoiding a red card in Manchester United’s goalless draw with Aston Villa on Sunday.

The 26-year-old had already been booked when he fouled Leon Bailey in the second half.

Yet Rashford was allowed to stay on the pitch, with the forward then hooked mere minutes later.

Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports, feels the United star was ‘very lucky’ to be given the benefit of the doubt.

“Well if Marcus Rashford hadn’t got a yellow card already then that would be a yellow card,” said the Liverpool icon.

“He is very lucky. He knows he can’t get the ball.

“That should have been a red card and United should be down to ten men for me.”

Rashford started for United just days after he’d been substituted in the club’s 3-3 Europa League draw with Porto.

The match on Sunday lacked quality from both sides, with a draw a fair result.

United came close to going ahead through Rashford early on, only for his powerful effort to be palmed away by Emiliano Martinez.

The Red Devils also hit the bar following a brilliant free-kick from Bruno Fernandes.

Yet United were fortunate to avoid conceding late, with Diogo Dalot making a superb block to deny Jaden Philogene in the closing stages.

The best player on the pitch was centre-back Jonny Evans.

And the United veteran was pleased with his side’s performance as they managed to avoid another humiliating defeat.

“We got a point against a good side away from home,” he said.

“The other night conceding three we wanted to be more defensive-minded to give ourselves a chance. We were looking for that one moment of quality, maybe on the counter and we nearly got it at the end.

“Fair play to Villa. They’re good players and you never feel comfortable. You’ve always got to be on your toes and ready.

“I still feel like I’m playing the game I always have, I still feel like I have speed in the legs to get me out of the bad moments.

“[Erik ten Hag] told me after the game the other night I’d play in this one.

“Even the match against Porto I wasn’t expecting to come on. It’s unlikely to have a double centre-back substitution. Every match I play now I just enjoy it.

“It’s still a privilege to play for this club. The pressures that come with it, it’s part of it. You see the fans at the end, the support they give the team. They have supported the players massively over the years.

“It was great for him [Erik ten Hag] to see that. The other night he got a bit emotional, you could see it on him, letting that game slip away.

“You could see everyone was running into the ground to get a half decent result.”
