A 34-year-old man has been arrested after brandishing a knife at police officers and ramming two PSNI vehicles in west Belfast.

The incident happened on the Falls Road at its junction with the Whiterock Road around 12.40am on Sunday.

Officers from the specialist Auto Crime Team and local policing teams were involved in the stop of a white Volkswagen Passat which had been earlier flagged to police.

In a statement, a police spokesperson said: “A 34-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of a number of driving offences, assault on police, possession of class A drugs and possession of an offensive weapon after failing to stop for police in west Belfast.

“Officers had attempted to stop the car the man was driving, a white Volkswagen CC, on Falls Road in west Belfast at around 12.40am. The Volkswagen then rammed two police vehicles before the driver exited the car, brandishing a large knife.

“He was subdued by police and subsequently arrested. A search of the vehicle revealed a quantity of white powder, believed to be cocaine.”
