There’s nothing anyone likes more than kicking back in the garden after work or at the weekend with a cold beer, or a coffee. Just get the comfy garden chairs out, grab a book, and have a good old-fashioned bit of rest and relaxation.

For many, like me, that usually involves a radio or a portable speaker hooked up to Spotify or Desert Island Discs. If you are of a similar ilk, you will love this latest product from audio specialists, Victrola, because they have come up with nifty speak that is cunningly designed as a rock.

Quite a big rock it has to be said, I was expecting most of the box to be packaging, but most of it was rock. Or I should say The Rock, because my daughter decided that we would all refer to the speaker as Dwayne, from now on.

Daft names aside, the speaker is actually a brilliant bit of kit with crystal clear sound and effortless and efficient connectivity – in fact it took me just 15 seconds to get connected as there was already a bit of charge on it.

Chargings comes via two methods, a USB-C or solar-charged battery panel on the top of the device. Fully charged, it will deliver up to 22 hours of playback with no wires needed.

Waterproof and dust-resistant, the speaker’s control panel is neatly concealed under a rubber-sealed flap. Personally, I wouldn’t want to leave it outside all the time in the English weather, but in theory, you can.

The rock is pretty big, but with a range of natural material colours and textures, it will blend in well. It certainly doesn’t look cheap or tacky, and the sound is genuinely pleasing. It’s basically speaker camouflage.

This is not the most premium speaker you will find in terms of sound, but nor is it really meant to be at the price range. That’s not to say there is a quality issue, there isn’t, and I was pleasantly surprised as I had expect a really gimmick-heavy product.

It’s a fun addition to any garden with the summer months approaching and if you wish you can link it up with multiple speakers.

Victrola Rock Speaker Connect is available via Amazon, selling for £119.

What users are saying

Irv Shoenstein: We just added the speaker to our front yard to add a little extra to our Halloween decorations. Sound quality is great and so far everything works perfectly. It rained here twice since receiving. The solar is keeping the speaker charged and the kids in the neighborhood love hearing the music when they come home from school. It’s going to be a great month!

David: I’ve owned a number of outdoor speakers. When compared to those, the Victrola offers subpar sound quality, even though it’s roughly the same price. It does put out a good amount of volume without sounding distorted. But it only sounds good if your ears are at the sweet spot (directly in front of the speakers). That’s a problem for a speaker shaped like a rock that’s meant to be placed at ground level. They do sound good in the bass department, which is greatly enhanced by the heft and size of the rock-like enclosure. The speaker has some weight to it.
